This year's AOBA
Congress in Washington DC will have in attendance a live Adisco Reunion
Band at the Dinner and Dance. The
band is made up of past alumni who were members of various Adisadel School bands
and Jazz groups. We encourage all Santaclausians to attend this year's Congress
to re-live the good old days....I'm sure you remember entertainment nights with
the school bands in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s....
Below are some of the members of the Reunion Band playing at the 2008
Congress...
Olu Akiwumi-Assani Elliot House: 1962-69 Drums
Olu was the drummer for the 2nd wave of the school jazz band, and actively
played from 3rd year through lower six. During the same period he was a
member of the Ringos and later the Reavers 5. Reavers 5 played
in countless pop shows in Accra for many years.
Olu is an Electronics Engineer who currently works in the Digital TV & Set
Top industry. He enjoys playing in a local blues/jazz/R&B band in Beacon NY
called the Howland Wolves. The Wolves play several local charity gigs
-- a source for releasing the pressures of corporate America.
"I hope that this event will draw a large crowd so we can raise a lot of
funds to help Adisadel. I also look forward to jamming with my old buddies
and catching up with them."
Dr. Kweku K. Bentil
Aglionby House:
1964-66 Vocals (Bass)
Kweku was a lead singer in the School Jazz
Band. He was also a member of the pop group affectionately known as the
“RINGOS” with Johnny Djokoto, Sam (Paa Kwesi) Mensah and
Olu Akiwumi-Assani. In addition to playing during performances by the
School Jazz Band, the RINGOS also played as a free-standing pop group and
thrilled students at dances and also at other schools (Wesley Girls, Holy
Child, Mfantsiman and St. Augustine’s)
Before leaving Ghana for further studies in the U.S.A, Kweku was the lead
singer for the “BEACH MELODIANS” (“UHURU #2” - the then
resident band at Labadi Pleasure Beach) and the “PLANETS” dance band
who played alongside the RAMBLERS as the resident bands at the “METROPOLE”
in Accra. While in North America Kweku has been featured as a lead singer on
highlife recordings by Ricky Telfer and Alfred Schall. Kweku,
along with Afranie Adomako, were also featured at the New Orleans
Jazz Festival, when they joined the Southern University Jazz Ensemble to
play some highlife tunes.
Kweku is a Civil Engineer and a graduate of the University of Florida.
After working in the private sector for many years, Kweku embarked on a
career in academics, where he served as an Associate Professor, Professor,
Department Chairman, Dean, Associate Vice Chancellor, and most recently, as
a College President. Currently, Kweku is a Consultant in higher education
and strategic global partnerships and lives in South Florida.
“Looking at the Old Boys who have
signed upso far, the 2008 Re-union Band is bound to be a hit. This
is a rare occasion to listen to a unique combination of recording artists,
production and recording engineers and other professionals with great music
talents. We have a wonderful selection of music planned for your pleasure
and entertainment. Therefore, I am extending an invitation to all
Santaclausians in North America to attend this year’s congress, dance to and
enjoy the music by a very special group of talented Old Boys, renew old
acquaintances and make new friends. Finally, I hope that our musical
contribution, on this special evening, will help us to raise a lot of funds
to support our Alma Mater. See you in DC. Cheers!”
Edmund Tawiah
Elliot House:
1973-78 Guitar, Keyboards
Edmund was the front man for Engine
No. 9, in 1978 during the school band revival in the late seventies. He
is a hobby musician who plays local jam sessions and tours with a gospel
group, Unity In Praise.
Edmund is a Civil Engineer and principal partner of his engineering firm
TCC & Associates. He resides in Vancouver, Washington and is a board member
of Adisadel
Foundation Inc, a non-profit organization that raises funds for
Adisadel College.
I am told my musical career
began when I was in the perambulator: my mother took me shopping and I was
singing the popular hit song of the day. A lady shopper was so impressed she
threw 2 shillings into my pram. I guess I’ve been hooked ever since. I
followed that up by picking up my dad’s acoustic guitar and teaching myself
how to play bass on it when I was about 7 or 8. Keyboard skills soon
followed when I found an unused piano at the church in Myohaung Barracks,
Apremdu.
My high school music career was a mixture of choir, pop groups and school
jazz band. I always remember the girls going crazy when I sang backing
vocals on “Wild World” (Cat Stevens): I thought “Hmmm I could really get
used to this life. Learning to play the sax was my new instrument at Adisco,
culminating with my playing “Take 5” (Dave Brubeck) on speech day and also
being featured on GBCTV. Man! I was ready to abandon school and turn
pro…….not! Oh no!
Ghana being what it was back then, I had to finish school first, and then
I went into accounting, which took me to Uganda, where I sang with the Armed
Forces Band when they visited, London where I was purely studying, and then
back to Africa in Malawi where I was with Price Waterhouse, but my joining a
band called Heaven, made my stay there pretty close to heaven…….fun fun fun!
I played keyboards with the band, sang and occasionally played sax.
Toronto is where I first put down a couple of my compositions in
Oketeke Studios courtesy of Ricky Telfer. I have to return to add
some more and make it a complete album. I also played in a nightclub with a
guitarist who needed a bass player for a short time.
I am currently based in Haddonfield , New Jersey where I play bass and
sing in a classic rock band called Boomerang. It’s composed of mature
musicians who started early, left it for a while and have now come home to
music alongside their regular careers. A few songs from our demo CD are
provided.
I feel I have been in accounting too long so I am transitioning into
becoming a naturopathic doctor, which has always been my passion: I am
currently certified as a Detoxification and Tissue Regeneration Specialist,
and also a Raindrop Technique massage therapist.
